Wolven

Info from the publisher

Di Toft, Wolven

Chicken House. ISBN: 9781905294909

Wolven is a fantasy firmly rooted in the mysterious present. A boy and his eccentric grandparents live near a strange, apparently cursed wood. Nat longs for a dog – but the dirty ungainly farm creature finally found by his grandfather hardly fits his image of the perfect pet. But it’s only when his dog starts to grow human ears that he realises that something is seriously wrong. The truth is stranger than his wildest dreams - the boy who appears is a shape-shifting werewolf in reverse. Woody is one of a noble breed of 'Wolven' driven into hiding centuries before only to be rediscovered by evil government scientists who intend to breed werewolves as weapons. Can Nat and Woody save the day? Fast, funny and accessible, this is the first of a brilliant and hugely commercial series from debut author Di Toft. Featuring a wicked lenticular cover – see Woody change from wolf to boy before your very eyes - Wolven has turned fantasy on its head with the creation of a reverse werewolf – a pet dog that turns into a boy!

Cara, Aquinas  10 out of 10

I enjoyed this book, but I felt it was aimed for younger children. The plot was ok, but this book is not one I would normally get into to. Overall a good read, but personally not my 'cup of tea'

Kelsa, Lisneal College, L'Derry  7 out of 10

I really enjoyed Wolven. I thought that it was very interesting when Nat and Woody went out and Woody turned into a dog. The only thing I didn't like was when Woody was being searched. It wasn't realistic at all! It was funny at times.

Nicole, Holy Cross College, Strabane  8 out of 10

Wolven was a really good book, although at times I didn't really get it. I would definitely recommend it to students around 8 to 10 years. The cover was really cool.

David, Holy Cross College, Strabane  9 out of 10

Fiona , St Patrick's High School, Keady  7 out of 10

I really didn't like this book and I felt that it dragged on and on. I thought it was really hard to get into as the plot of the story was very boring. In my opinion it wasn't a very interesting read and I would not recommend it to anyone not interested in 'Fantasy Fiction'.

Megan, St Patrick's High School, Keady  3 out of 10

It was a very good book to read I loved the cover - that was what made me pick it up and read more. The start was brilliant, the middle was good but the end was not what I expected it to be. Overall I really enjoyed this book and hope there is a sequel soon because it is a brilliant mystery book to read any time you want and it is so handy to take with you. It was a great adventure to read so please do a sequel I can't wait till it comes out.

Ciara, St Patrick's High School, Keady  9 out of 10

I found Wolven a quite an interesting and enjoyable book to read. I felt quite sorry for the Wolf as he didn't know when he was going to change from a dog into a wolf. I thought that it was an action packed book. I would recommend it to anyone who likes animals.

Aine , Sacred Heart College, Omagh  8 out of 10

The book has some parts that are really horrible, and particularly the gruesome descriptions of blood. I like most scary books so I didn't really mind reading this one. I think any age group would like this read and indeed any boy or girl interested in scary books.

Clare, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  9 out of 10

It was quite a good book but it wasn't one of my favourites.

Connel , Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  7 out of 10

This was an OK book, it had surprises at every corner. It was funny as well when Woody says stuff that he has heard on the TV. If you like stuff about werewolves then this is definitely the book for you.

Elizabeth , Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  7 out of 10

I found wolven a strange but quite a good book.

shane, St Paul's Bessbrook  6 out of 10

Zakk , Royal Belfast Academical Institution  9 out of 10

Wolven is a brilliant book about a young boy called nat carver whose life changes when he picks up a smelly strange mutt out of a farm. The dog is really a wolven the last of its kind and every so often the mutt changes from being a dog to a human. The wolven escaped from a top secret government project and now some very bad poeple want him back.

Dylan, St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen  9 out of 10

Katie, St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen  10 out of 10

It was a good idea for a story but I found it a bit too unrealistic so I didn't enjoy it that much.

Grace, Sullivan Upper School  5 out of 10

this a great book and can't wait for the next one in the sreies

simmon, Bangor Grammar School  9 out of 10

This book had a good plot. But i lost interest about 100 pages into it.

Aileen, Hunter House  6 out of 10

The book Wolven is a good example to show that a Dog is really a Mans best friend. When The Government create an Hideous creature with the name Lucas Scale there is only one thing he wants, Woody. Woody is a Wolven only to excist in legend is the last Wolven of his clan and very bad people want him back. Hope there is a second book to this.

Daniel , St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen  10 out of 10

This book is good. It shows how Nat finds a friend in Woody and how they try to get away fromthe people in the test lab who are trying to catch Woody.

Nathan, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  9 out of 10

I didn't like this book at all. It wasn't a good story and it wasn't interesting. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone!

Tina, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  1 out of 10

I think that Wolven is great and I would recommend the book to girls as well as boys. It`s very exiting and it has a bit of horror

ryan, Other School  10 out of 10

This was quite an interesting book with some original ideas and not just a run of the mill werewolf story. The cover was spectacular and when I took it home my children all became very interested in it (ages 10, 8 and 5). The two eldest children expressed an interest in reading it and I reckon that this book is geared for 9 - 13 year olds. I think it would appeal to both boys and girls especially if they are animal lovers!

Mrs Beattie, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan  7 out of 10

I really like this book it was very different. I thought the cover was really interesting and it made me pick the book up and find out more about it. I found the start very good but the ending wasn't what I expected. It is a strange book and you never know what is going to happen next but overall it was very enjoyable!

shauna, St Patrick's High School, Keady  8 out of 10

did not like it lost interest in it after about 4 chapters

Dean, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan  3 out of 10

I really enjoyed this book , Woody and Nat were so brave. This story will attract boys and girls. I was put off by the cover when I first seen it. It is a great read!!

Mrs M , St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen  8 out of 10

This book was fantastic, very enjoyable!

Ellen, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  10 out of 10

This book is truly adventurous and exciting to read. The first chapter and the blurb already gives us a hint of what the book is about. The book also has some parts that are disgusting, and some parts use description of blood, but I like scary books so i don't really mind reading about it. I would reccomend this book to all my friends.

Karolina, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  10 out of 10

Although I found this to be a predictable story half way through there were a few twists which kept me entertained. I liked the character of Woody who was brave, loveable and funny. I think it would be enjoyed more by boys than girls.

Mrs McConnell, St Louise's, Belfast  6 out of 10

I did not really like this bookvery much. Some bits of it were quite good but I have read better books. I just did not get into it but if other people did then I'm glad so I am going to give it a respectable mark.

Shane, St Paul's Bessbrook  5 out of 10

I liked this book a lot - it was a great book which I could hardly put the down. This book was one of my favourites books in the whole collection.

Eimear, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  5 out of 10

Wolven was very boring at the start but as I started to read more and more of it I became very interested and just could not set it down but I found it had a very bad ending. Wolven is a book well worth reading.

Ciára , St Patrick's High School, Keady  6 out of 10

Wolven is a very obvious book from start to middle. Soon after you are half way through a giant twist emerges that I would never have expected and you somehow become engrossed in the book and cannot pull your head away from the pages. It keeps you entertained all the way through and is extremely exciting. I would definitely recomend it.

nathan, St Joseph's College Coalisland  9 out of 10

Wolven is a book with a very unusual topic. It was easy to read and, I would recomend it to anyone who will give it a chance. Woody is like a child not in body but, in mind he is so young .Woody is Nats best freind his only friend. Woody will do any thing to help Nat he will fight to the bitter end. A great read all over. P.S watch out for the lycanthropes!

Maeve, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  9 out of 10

I think Wolven was a good read, It was a book I would like to keep reading on because of the twists of the story. I was disappointed with the blurb because of the dull words used. This alone would put me off buying it so I think 8 out of 10 is a fair mark for this book.

Sammy, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  8 out of 10

This book is the most mysterious, exciting and constantly thrilling book I've ever read in my life. The author ''Di Toft'' is a master of storytelling and literature when it comes to writing twists and turns behind every corner. I absolutely loved it.

Bradley, Aquinas  10 out of 10

Wolen is ok I wouldnt recommend it for girls. I think its more a boy type than a girls. There were some good similes in the book. The front cover was fantastic the way it moved from a boy to a wolf.

Sinead, Holy Cross College, Strabane  7 out of 10

I thought that It was a brilliant.I did not want to put the book down.I always wanted to find out what was going to happen next.I would like to read her next book.

jennifer, St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen  10 out of 10

the front cover is not to be messed with. the way the cover changes is awsome!!!! and makes an amazing sound!!!

matthew2, Royal Belfast Academical Institution  8 out of 10

I thought this book was very interesting and mysterious. I would always want to read on to find out what would happen to Woody and Nat next. Overall I thought this was a very good book.

Eoin, Royal Belfast Academical Institution  10 out of 10

What a book, I think you would agree. It had all the criteria you could want in a book. It had humour and excitment . Honestly when I started reading it, I wasn't quite sure where it was going with the story line but the author managed to pull it off. The way he put so much drama into a 292 page book is a great achievement. Job well done!

Gary, St Patrick's High School, Keady  9 out of 10

I am probably a bit above the average reading age of this book but I enjoyed it all the same. I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters were developed so well. I liked the somerset dialect coming through when Mick and Apple were talking, and also Woody's development in speaking; 'cyclehatrick treatment' and when he was 'confused.com.' It made me laugh but it finished on a cliff hanger....nooo!I want to read more!

Marilyn , Other School  9 out of 10

I didnt't really like the start of the book but when I got into the story I found it more interesting. I thought that this book was good... I thought it was a good storyline and very enjoyable . It was cool how the boy could turn into a wolf and back to a human.

Lauren, St Genevieve's  9 out of 10

I thought the book was great!! my favourite charactacter is Woody. It was a bit scarey in parts and I cant wait to read some more books!! keep reading reading reading!!

Rachael, Hunter House  9 out of 10

I liked the detail and the humour running through the story, and I liked the diversity of the characters! Nat longing for a dog was very true to the way someone really would and I really enjoyed it. I particularly loved the cover, and spent ages watching it flick from boy to wolf!

Jemima , Methodist College Belfast  8 out of 10

I thought Wolven was an interesting book. I liked Woody's character but I wasn't so sure about Nat's character. I thought it was a little funny at times and enjoyed reading it. I would have to give it a 8/10 and recommend it for everyone who loves fantasy books. This is the one to read.

Paul, De la Salle College, Belfast  8 out of 10

I Thought this book was amazing. My favourite characters are Woody and Nat , they are The two main characters in this book I just love this book it is the best !

catreece, St Louise's, Belfast  8 out of 10

To start off with , the cover on this book is awesome! The story line is very interesting and I really enjoyed reading it. It is not hard to read and it is full of action. I would specially recommend this book to boys with great imagination, aged from 9 to 11. I gave this book 10/10 because it really deserved it!

Sebastian, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  10 out of 10

I thought this book was really mysterious and strange, it's really more for boys but I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to people who enjoy mystery..

Tara, Lisneal College, L'Derry  7 out of 10

I really enjoyed this book, it was filled with action and mystery the whole way through. A number one must read!

David, Royal Belfast Academical Institution  10 out of 10

I thought Wolven's storyline was fairly interesting at the start, but when I got into it a bit more it was REALLY good. The main character, Woody, and the fact he could turn from canine to human and back, were both great. Definitely have to say i'd give it a 10/10.

Tony, De la Salle College, Belfast  10 out of 10

This book is probably mostly for boys and people with a good imagination. It was hard to get into but after a while I really got into it. I read before going to bed and when I had finished that was what I dreamt about! It was really WEIRD.

Dearbhail, Victoria College, Belfast  6 out of 10

The Wolven book is fantastic! It's a very enjoyable read and it's suitable for ages 10 to 14. The best bit about it is the Lycans (they are cool). I also liked the way Woody and Nat try to figure out what happened to the captured clan. I would recommend this book to any reader who has an open mind.

Gareth, De la Salle College, Belfast  9 out of 10

At the start I was attracted straight away but when I got into the book a bit I was slightly confused but I worked out was going on. Near the middle there is a part about following the girl Iona looking at CCTV footage, I thought it was cool. Overall I liked the book very much, I would reccommed it to a friend. It's a book for 11-13 year-olds and a boy's book.

James, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan  8 out of 10

I found Wolven hard to get in to at the start but once you got in to it it was enjoyable. Parts of it was hard to understand but overall I enjoyed it. I loved the idea and the way Woody could change from a dog to human. I would reccommend this to a friend. I would say it is more for 12 -13 year olds and a boys book. Great Book!
