Darren Shan, Dark Calling

HarperCollins. ISBN: 9780007260454

Events take an unexpected turn in this ninth awesome foray into the worlds of the Demonata..."I know it's ridiculous. Lights can't whisper. But I swear I heard a voice calling to me. It sounded like static to begin with, but then it came into focus, a single word repeated over and over. Softly, slyly, seductively, insistently. Come!" The Disciples are being manipulated by beings older than time. Only Kernel Fleck knows that something is wrong. But he is in the grip of a creature who cares nothing for the fate of humanity. Voices are calling to him from the darkness and he's powerless to resist. Kernel has already been to hell and back. Now he's about to go further!

mind blowing

I do not think this novel was as good as Shan's other works as I feel the story was quite disjointed although it did manage to hold my attention.Very gory at times but anyone who likes this type of novel should enjoy it.

Mrs, Belfast Boys Model School  6 out of 10

I really enjoyed this book and loved the story line. You definitely read it if you like horror books. It is not my favourite Shan book but it was very good.

Jack, Belfast Boys Model School  7 out of 10

Sinead, Holy Cross College, Strabane  3 out of 10

This book was rubbish compared to the rest of Darren Shan's books . I might enjoy the rest in the series but I wouldn't suggest this book to read..... I wouldn't recommend this book to other people unless they read the start of the series.

Sammy, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  2 out of 10

I definitely hated this book!!! It was the worst book I have ever read in my life!!! I thought it was going to be scary because of its title and i was really looking forward to reading it, but then it turned out really bad. I am really dissapointed with this book and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone!

Karolina, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  1 out of 10

This was an amazing book, with a gripping plot that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. I love a good horror story and this didn't disappoint me, with good use of language and cliff hangers to keep me turning the pages. This has to be one the best stories I've read!

Connie, Victoria College, Belfast  9 out of 10

This book was brilliant and really cool. It was really easy too get into and I couldn’t put itdown. I found it really cool with all the different dimensions and portals.

Jpnathan, St Patrick's High School, Keady  10 out of 10

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it had an intriguing plot line. After reading this, I am very interested in taking a look at the other books in this series. I would recommend this book to anyone, regardless of whether they liked the 'Horror' genre or not.

Megan, St Patrick's High School, Keady  9 out of 10

I found this book quite thrilling and it had a really good story line. I think alot more people should read it.

shane, St Paul's Bessbrook  9 out of 10

I admit the book was a Little bit sick with all the details, But it was exciting.
The book was deifintely one of the best by darre shan.

Robert, Bangor Grammar School  10 out of 10

This book was very mysterious but as it got to the middle I was expecting what was coming next. So therefore it was good but ended badly. However I loved the start so I am giving it a good score.

Sean, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  9 out of 10

I have read the other books in the the Demonata series and they were excellent, but this book was rubbish compared to the rest. I might enjoy the rest in the series but I wouldn't suggest this book to read.....

Aoife, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  3 out of 10

The Darren shan saga and the demonata are absolutely brill personally my favourite is lord loss in the demonata and vampire prince in the saga i fully recommend this but if your under 8 i wouldnt really read this unless you want to have nightmares about demons and vampires!!! i would give this 11 out of 10 if i could

Matthew, Other School  10 out of 10

The Beginning of this book put me off, but when i read on i got hooked. I haven't read the books before this one but i think that i will read the next book in this series

Aileen, Hunter House  8 out of 10

I thought this book was quite an imaginative book because of the details it gave. For instance in the first chapter he thought he was in heaven and then he realised it wasn't a dream. I do not want to spoil the book for anyone. I would recommend it to people aged from 10-14 years old. The plot is very scary. I love Darren Shan books and Icannot wait to read the next in the series.

Brendan, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  10 out of 10

This book wasn't really for me, but it had a good plot. I haven't read any of his other books but I still might.

Eimear, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  4 out of 10

I've read the other books and they were brilliant but this one is rubbish compared to the other books.

jack, Sullivan Upper School  3 out of 10

When I picked up this book I thought that it was going to be amazing and easy to read however it did not deliver. It was really hard to understand and too much of a build up. I found that the book was too much thought out and I felt the writer tried too hard to make it all interesting and relitivly easy to read. By doing this he confused the readers even more. This book is a sequal and to fully understand this book I feel that you need to read the rest of the Darren Shan books. However I wouldn't say that it was absolutely terrible and you shouldn't read it at all because it did have a lot of action, a bit to much for my liking and im in to all the action and gory books. It had a very good ending. This book is definitely not for the faint hearted. I would definitely recommend this book to older boys around the age of 14 maybe not so much the girls. (a very well illustrated cover)

Megan, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  4 out of 10

I have read a few books in this series, not in any particular order, but this has to be my least favourite. There was a lot of build up and the first 45 pages were a recap of a book I had already read. The action at the end was Darren Shan at his best but I don't think it was enough to save this book.

Mrs Beattie, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan  5 out of 10

I found some parts in this book confusing, however in my continued reading of it I understood it better and I really enjoyed it. It can be gruesome, disgusting, evil and scary at times-well all the time! I thought I would hate this book as I would have never have chosen it. The cover really put me off! But I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it a lot. Not the best book but I would recommend it to read. Don't judge a book by its cover!

Aoife, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  6 out of 10

I thought this was hard because I kept losing track of the story. I think you have to read the other Darren Shan books to connect and engage with the characters. It's not for the faint hearted because all the books are full of guts and blood so don't read it before bed.

Dean, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  3 out of 10

I thought this book was boring, and hard to get into. All this book is about is blood and gour. It got a bit better but this book is not for me. Once you do get into it you lose track of it, if you are going to read it read it from start to finish all in one time. Some of the characters were well described, especially the Cornal.

Aaron, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  6 out of 10

I found this book hard to get into and just a bit boring. I think it would be better if you have read the other Darren Shan books as you can relate more to the characters.

Mrs McConnell, St Louise's, Belfast  4 out of 10

The book has got a very scary atmosphere. Demonata sounds like a very dreary place. This book is like a horror, thirller story and some action, you just always want to know what happens next as lots of many gruesome things happen in the book. I recommend it to 11+. It's a brillant book, I loved it!

Ellen, Holy Cross College, Strabane  10 out of 10

DARREN SHAN ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jemma, Other School  10 out of 10

This book of the Darren Shan series was the most gruesome and scariest yet. Darren Shan is the most brilliant writer yet.

Daniel, St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen  9 out of 10

Daren Shane = amazing

Joe, Other School  10 out of 10

I LOVE DARREN SHAN'S BOOK'S !!!!!!! This was so scary!!!

Rachel, Methodist College Belfast  10 out of 10

I thought the book was very good. It is gruesome but not scary. It had very good dimensions.

Jonathan, St Patrick's High School, Keady  9 out of 10

I thought this book was difficult to understand at the start because I didn't know any of the characters. It confused me a bit but when I read throughout the book I got to know it better and I enjoyed it! You sort of need to read the books before it to get better understanding. Bits are disgusting and gruesome but I would say it's a good book, but mainly for boys.

Aoife, Sacred Heart College, Omagh  7 out of 10

This book was a really good one but you need to read the previous books to understand the storyline. It has lots of adjectives and it was based on demons and disciples and werewolves all fighting to keep the planet earth and other planets of the universe. It's a book that you just want to read more and more of it and is detailed and interesting.

Kyle, Holy Cross College, Strabane  10 out of 10

This book is hard to understand and it was a little boring and some bits was exciting but overall it was hard to get into.

Owen, St Joseph's College Coalisland  8 out of 10

I thought this book was good but you need to read all of the other books before this one, this book can't be read if you have not read any of the Darren Shan books.

Ben, Bangor Grammar School  5 out of 10

All the books previous to this one were very exciting, gripping and unput-downable as was the spectacular vampire series before hand as Darren Shan is a truely gifted writer and definitely has a spark for the gruesome and the horrific and has never disappointed before. However this book was a slight let down as it had taken a break from the non-stop excitement that Shan has kept alive throughout two whole series. This was still a good book but was slightly out of place with the rest of the series.

Brían, St Paul's Bessbrook  7 out of 10

I think that the book is very interesting and I enjoyed the story. The author held my interest as when I finished one chapter I wanted to keep reading. I would recommend this book for boys as the storyline was geared for their reading

Sean, Holy Cross College, Strabane  7 out of 10

Dark Calling was a very good I would recommend it to a friend. It is now one of my favourite books.

Nathan, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  10 out of 10

The Dark calling was brillant! The book drew me in as soonas I looked at the cover. Personally I prefered the Vampire Saga but this book was fantastic. I love That none of his books are the same and he brings something new to his readers. I loved the book as it was all about gore, murder, magic and dark creatures. This Is My favourite type of book and I would recommend it to everyone!

Nicola, St Genevieve's  10 out of 10

Bhí an leabhar seo maith ach níor thig mé an cuid is mo do mar níor leigh mé na leabhar eile

This book was good but i didnt understand most of it because i didnt read the other books

ciarán, Colaiste Feirste  8 out of 10

I thought Dark Calling was a really interesting book it's full of strange new things and it leaves you with questions that are confusing. I would recomend the book to any one who enjoys reading thrilling books.

Enda , St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan  7 out of 10

Tá an leabhar seo iontach. Is é seo an cead uair a leigh mé faoi an Demonata. Tá an sceal maith agus tá Beranubus mar tá sé i gconaí fionnuar. Ní thig liom fanacht gabh di an eile.

This book is brilliant. This is the first time I have read about the Demonata. The storys plot is brilliant and Beranubus is my favourite character because he is always cool.I can't wait till the next instalment.

Gavin, Colaiste Feirste  10 out of 10

I thought this book was FANTASTIC!!! It pulled me in straight away. The story was full of horror and gore, which is great for me because that’s the kind of book I like! One of the best things about this book was the ending, which was totally unexpected, and left you on tender hooks for the next and final instalment. I would definitely recommend this book to other readers!

Ryan, St Patrick's High School, Keady  10 out of 10

Great book! It was very thrilling and exciting. The story line was great and full of horror! The story pulled me in so much, that I read the whole book in one go!

Sebastian, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown  9 out of 10

Just by looking at the cover its already starting to pull me in!!!!
I've only read the 1st page and it's quite goery but that is my favourite type of book!!!!!!
The creature seems to be quite vicious but cool at the same time.
For anyone who hasn't read it you should.
If you like Horror books you will love this!!!!!!!
I've now finished 2 chapters and its brill!!!!

Chloe, Belfast Royal Academy  8 out of 10

It is a very interesting book, but I think I enjoyed the vampire series more

Courtney, Belfast Royal Academy  10 out of 10

Darcy, Belfast Royal Academy  10 out of 10

I thought it was really good book. I thought it was brilliant. I really enjoyed it but I didn't like the ending a bit I personally thought it could be improved on.

jeswin, Bangor Grammar School  8 out of 10

Callum, Royal Belfast Academical Institution  7 out of 10

Very thrillng and exciting. Filled with horror and gore. Once you start reading you can't stop even if you wanted to. One of the best books you will ever read.

James, Royal Belfast Academical Institution  10 out of 10

words can't express this book. there is a lot of horror and blood boiling battles what more can a teenage boy want.

Montell, Royal Belfast Academical Institution  10 out of 10

I really liked the start of this book. It kept my interest the whole way through. I am looking forward to reading other books by this author.

Matthew , St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan  8 out of 10

This book starts off good and really exciting, but when you start to read it you can't get into it and somehow you lose concentration easily. I don't think I would like to read this book again and unfortunately I would not offer it to a friend to read.

Rebecca, Lisneal College, L'Derry  3 out of 10

I think this was a great book. The storyline is really exciting and funny. The cover is brilliant as well.

Conor, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan  10 out of 10

I loved this book some bits were a bit dull but apart from that it was great the lack of violence disapointed me but I don'realy care

Jonathan, Sullivan Upper School  9 out of 10

This series has become astonishingly detached from reality, so you don't really care about the characters.

Michael, Sullivan Upper School  2 out of 10

I think that dark calling is a thrill to read and is also a book that you can not get bored of that easily. I have read three of the previous books and this is the ice breaker of the books so far. It was a thrill to read and is one of the best books I have read I'm looking forward to the next one.

Brendan , St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan  9 out of 10

It is a very scary book and I did not really like it because I am not interested in horror books or films as they are too predictable. I would definitely not recommend this book to anyone under 11 as they would have nightmares for the rest of their lives - even just thinking about it gives me the chills.

Dearbhail, Victoria College, Belfast  3 out of 10

Dark Calling was a terrific book to read, I really enjoyed it. Even though this is part of a series it stands alone as a good read. I haven't read the whole series yet but it still made sense. It has a lot of plot lines one of which makes it very thrilling. This is a horror book and I would say it is one of the best I have ever read.

Joshua, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan  8 out of 10

this book is unbelieveably exciting

nathan, Royal Belfast Academical Institution  10 out of 10
