Derek Landy, The Faceless Ones
HarperCollins. ISBN: 9780007302161
Third bone-breaking, belly-busting adventure in the series that puts the "funny" back in! um! funny series. That didn't really work, did it? If you've read the previous Skulduggery books then you know what the Faceless Ones are -- and if you know what the Faceless Ones are, then you can probably take a wild guess that things in this book are going to get AWFULLY sticky for our skeletal hero and his young sidekick. If you haven't read the previous Skulduggery books then what are you doing reading this? Go and read them right now, so that you know what all that stuff in the previous paragraph was about. Done? Good. So now you're on tenterhooks too, desperately awaiting the answers to all your questions, and instead you're going to have to wait to read the book. Sorry about that.

— michael, Other School
Well done Derek Landy. I was backing this book and I'm glad Skulduggery got the recognition he deserves! I've looked over this book again and I'm glad to say I'll be giving it a 10/10 this time which puts it level with my other all-time favourite, the Book Thief, (which should be in the award!)
— Jason, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan
I thought this book was very imaginative and exciting. I would recommend this book to all of my friends. I thought the ending was amazing, I cannot wait to read the rest!
— Kellie, Lisneal College, L'Derry
Fast paced, and exciting. You would have to be mad not to like this book. A brilliant twist at the end and that is why the book is really exciting.
— Shaun , Bangor Grammar School
one of the best books i've ever read. could do better than Harry Potter in the futrue. wow. 10 out of 10
— Shaun, Bangor Grammar School
Amazing! You must read this book!. I cannot wait to read the other Skulduggery books.. I could not book it done until I had finished it !
— Mrs , Belfast Boys Model School
I absolutely loved this book, the edge of the seat suspense, the inevitable fight and the chase to get the portal closed before the bad guys. I love Skulduggery’s wise - cracking ways and Valkery's sarcastic comments. I myself cannot wait for the Dark Days to come out as I have been reading the series since it first came out. I know that in the next book Landy will deliver yet another classic tale of Skulduggery and Valkery's mental yet exhilarating adventures.
— Rose, Victoria College, Belfast
A very exciting book that you can't set down. I loved the way it was magical but it also had the detective side in the story as well. I thought that it would have been impossible to understand the third book without reading the first two. It's hard to choose whether I liked the second or the third one better because they were both so good. Can't wait for the next book "Dark Days" to come out. You're definitely in suspense after the last one.
— Peter , Other School
A very fast moving, action packed adventure keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout.
I enjoyed this book but I think it would have been easier to understand if I had read the other Skulduggery Pleasant novels. There are different types of magicians with different powers and it is sometimes difficult to understand what their roles are.
— C, Other School
It's a brilliant book, I couldn't put it down. Fantastic story line, witty and the characters are simply amazing. I can't wait for the fourth book! It's a bit creepy, but I love the fact that it's all sorcery and magical and everything. The creepiness made it better! I hope the new characters such as Fletcher Renn and Remus Crux are in the next book as well.
— Emer, Holy Cross College, Strabane
Creeeeeepy.
It turns a man inside out. yuck
— Katie, St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen
this book is amazing! i love fantasy. The characters are awesome - they are all magicy and cool and exciting. it was cool at the huge battle
— Mark, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
A brilliant book for people who like magic, fantasy and skeleton detectives. I have read this book again and again because I enjoyed it so much. It is scary at times and witty at others.
— Anna, Aquinas
This book is immensely awesome and has an unbelievably good twist at the end, I'm waiting for the fourth book to come out!!!!
— John , Aquinas
BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
— conill, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan
This book was very exciting and enjoyable!
— Ellen, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
I thought this book was amazing, it had a lot of action going on in the book, every chapter i read had something happening, its one of those books you can never put down, you just keep on reading it because of how much is going on in it. Its a really great book and i would reccomend it to anyone who likes fantasy/detective books.
— Karolina, Sacred Heart College, Omagh
I thought that Skulduggery was a really good book and I really injoyed reading it. I really loved the part where they found out the old man was on the other team and he tried to kill Valkriey. I cant wait until the next book comes out.
— catherine, Hunter House
This book was almost impossible to put down and really funny. The ending has a brilliant cliffhanger that makes ou want to read the next book. I can't wait until the next book comes out!
— Joe, Sullivan Upper School
I read this book because I thought I should and wow I really enjoyed it. I haven't read all the others but would now like to. I don't think you need to have read the others to be able to enjoy this book and I'm looking forward to the next one because after all I need to know what happens to Skulduggery.
— Mrs Cowdrey, Bangor Grammar School
I didn't really get the point of this story probably because i didn't read any of the other Skulduggery books so it was hard to get into. I would not recommend it.
— Sinead, St Joseph's College Coalisland
I really loved this book and I enjoyed it even more 'cause I had read the other two books in the series. If I hadn't read the other books I would have been really confused.
— Grace, Sullivan Upper School
I didn't really like the book maybe because i have not read the other Skulldugery Pleasant books
— John, St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen
I loved this book and I have loved all th rest of the skulldugery!
— Dylan, Bangor Grammar School
I really enjoyed reading this book, because I'm not really used to reading horror or murder books, but I decided to give this one a go. Now I'm really glad that I did, as it's a brilliant book filled with action and I would love the series to keep going!
— David, Holy Cross College, Strabane
Iv'e read the first and second book and am currently reading the third one. I met the author when I was about nine I honestly had no interest at all, but I won the fancy dress competition in the Central Library and won a book, so I went and got it signed by Derek Landy. I had drawn a picture and he sighed 'To Leigh, I like this!'. I was so happy and felt great.
He then drew a picture of Skullduggery Pleasant and I was really happy.
I got home and was honestly still not interested but I decided I'd give it a go, even though I didn't like reading but I loved it so much and I couldn't keep my face out of it.
Ever since then I like reading but only his books, I think they're the best in the world.
HE IS MY INSPIRATION AND SOMETIMES I DREAM OF THE BOOK, LIKE ME ACTING STEPHANIE!
I think that Derek Landy just has to win this award more
than anyone else because he really, really deserves it .
If I could I would give him 20 out of 10 but I can't so 20/20!!!
— Leigh, Victoria College, Belfast
Me and my twin, Leigh met the Author when I was about 9 and I have read all three of his books and I hope it becomes as famous as the Harry Potter series... My favourite has to be the first one- probably because my copy is signed buy Derek Landy, I met him at the Central Library in town... 10/10
— Laura, Victoria College, Belfast
I've read the first two books in this series and this one is just as good as the first two. It is exciting and mysterious. Great if you love detective books as this one has an unusual twist!! I would recommend you read the first books before you read this one as it gets complicated and history from the first two will help you understand. It’s Fabulous!
— Becky, Victoria College, Belfast
This is a completely amazing series and i couldn't put them down! i've read them over and over again and i never get tired of them! they're very funny and tense with awesome plots and brilliant characters! theres something for everyone in these books! 'The faceless ones' is the best yet with a great plot, great humour, great characters, and great fun! they're hilarious!
DEFINATELY recommended to anyone!
— olivia , Belfast Royal Academy
I thought this book was a bit dull as I don't really like detective books. I thought that the writer could have wrote better chapters and better cliffhangers to make it more interesting and keep the audience more intune but I think you have to read the previous two to enjoy this one.
— Sammy, Sacred Heart College, Omagh
I didn't really like this book as I found it a bit hard to follow. It had strange names for the characters that were hard to read.
— Eoin, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
This was a brilliant book. I loved it. It is full of fantasy, horror and action. I can't wait for the next one. Until then I think I better read the first two. So if you really like magic and action this is definitley the book for you.
— Elizabeth, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
This is the first book in this series that I have read. The other books don't stay on the shelves long enough for me to read but I will definitely be reading them now. I got through this book in no time at all because I literally couldn't put it down. This books has everything, humour, adventure, fantasy and horror. Excellent!
— Mrs Beattie, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan
This is an great book, it is a page turn and i didn't want to put it down. When the next Sulduggery comes out im going to be one of the first to read it.
— simon, Bangor Grammar School
This book is so brilliant that it made want to read the other books as well. I can't wait for the next book to come out. I will be first in line to read it.
— Shannon, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
I thought this was a great book. It is the first of the Skulduggery books that I have read but will now go and read the first two! Great and inventive story, fast moving and exciting plot, cliffhangers on every chapter with a fantastic ending.
— Mr McDonald, Victoria College, Belfast
I thought this book was amazing. I love the characters names. I loved the character Valkyrie the most because to her parents she is a normal 14 year old year but to her friends she something different. I loved it and I would recommend it to the public
— Brendan, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
I love this book in fact the whole series so far. I thought it would remain my favourite but its been matched by another book. The book is clever and well written. It has suspense, adventure and magic. The characters both heroes and villains are well written and the storyline pulls you right in. This book has everything you could wish for in a story. I would recommended for readers of all ages.
— Mrs McConnell, St Louise's, Belfast
rubbish 0 out of 10
— emma, Victoria College, Belfast
I absolutly loved this book and couldn't put it down.
The story line was good and the ending was unbelievable, i really didn't expect it.
It's the first time i've read one of the skudugery books and now i'm definitly going to read the others.

— Joe, Other School
I really like this book! There is a great storyline and I think all the new villians are awesome! I love the dry wit and the twist in the end. Although Derek Landy should hurry up and write another one, coz I loved this book! 10 out of 10!!!!!!!!!
— David, Methodist College Belfast
One of the greatest books I have ever read
— Thomas , Methodist College Belfast
I have read the other 2 books but this one is my favourite.
It has a really gripping plot and a very clever ending
— Fiona, Methodist College Belfast
I found this book to be very boring to begin with and hard to get into. But the last few chapters where full of excitement and thrills. A book well worth the read!
— Noeleen, St Patrick's High School, Keady
Possibly the greatest book I have ever read.
— Oisin, St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen
I think this book was exellent, and the story line was very good. I liked all the ideas in the book. I would definatly read it again. The battles in it were fantastic too.
— Aimee, Holy Cross College, Strabane
I liked this book very much - it was a good read. I have never read any Skulduggery Pleasant book but after reading the Faceless Ones I would for sure read them.
— Eimear, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
This is a FANTASTIC book. The battle at the bridge and the farm was inspired. Brill twist at the end with skulduggery's death. This one is my favourite
— George, Bangor Grammar School
This book was extremely interesting and kept me hooked from start to finish. The plot and characters were really well thought out, and unlike some novels, there were no gaping holes in the telling of the story. It's definitely a book I'd love to read again, and I encourage all who enjoy a good sense of humour combined with a tough of mystery. This book deserves 9/10!!
— Lauren, St Paul's Bessbrook
I thought this book was great for action and great for a ton of horror. I liked the book for its good cover and a story that kept you for the duration. It deserves a 8 out of 10. GREAT
— Zakk, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
Funy,Witty and very very magical a brilliant book for all the family. I could not put it down.
— Daniel, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
I think it was brillant at the start and it got really interesting near the end. I have to get it eight out of ten
— John, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
This book was weird but it started to get really better at the end. I would give this book a 7 out of 10 because it wasnt as good as I though it would be.I t would have been better if it was more funny.
— Eimhear, St Joseph's College Coalisland
I didn't like this book at all, it wasn't my sort of book. It looks good and interesting but it's not. It was very boring for me!
— Tina, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
These sort of books are not really my type of books but this book is basically about a skeleton detective , and I don't want to go into too much detail about it but what I can say is I liked it and the ending was unexpected.
— Edwin, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
I did not really like this book as it took ages to get into and when I got into it I found it very very boring.
— Sean, St Patrick's High School, Keady
I thought this book was brillant - you just need to read the first two books to fully understand the story! The best part was the end, the cliffhanger ending leaves you wanting more. I would recommend this book to age 10-14 and to both males and females.
— Gareth, De la Salle College, Belfast
I really enjoyed this book! I haven't read the other two but i'm planning to get them at Christmas and I can't wait for book four!!!! The good thing about this award is that it has introduced new types of books to me. Normally i wouldn't have read this book because the cover didn't appeal to me. But this book was so exciting and really hard to put down I absolutely loved it and it is now in my top ten favourite books! I would really recommend this book to anyone one who loves excitement and adventure!
— Chloe, Sullivan Upper School
I didn't like this book that much so I only read up to the 3rd chapter.
— Catherine, Sacred Heart College, Omagh
Skulduggery's third book is certainly decent for children in older primary years, but it proves to have nothing ground breaking. With little actual depth, it won't be suitable for older audiences, or people looking for a tangible plot, though the humour is certainly an attraction. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone 9-12, but no older.
— Kevin, Holy Cross College, Strabane
This was a very exciting book, I really enjoyed it. If you enjoy dry wit then this book is for you. It has a lot of action but is very predictable. Though sometimes I got a bit lost, I would definitely recommend this book. It made me very eager to read on, it was very addictive and I actually couldn't put it down! a brilliant book
— Laura, St Genevieve's
This book was the most amazing and thrilling book I have ever read. The humour by Skullduggery was so funny I could'nt put the book down. I've got all three books and I can't wait for the fourth one. Derek Landy is the best writer I have ever read. He was the author who really got me into reading and now I read all the time. SKULLDUGGERY PLEASANT TO WIN!!
— SHANE, St Paul's Bessbrook
I really enjoy the Skulduggery Pleasant series, they are my faviourite books EVER!
I bought this book on the week it came out and it is such a good read.
There would only be one bad comment avout it, but a positive bad comment- You have to read the other 2 books to understand this one. It is so funy it makes you laugh-out-loud so many times. I love Valkyrie- (or Stephanie as some people only know her as)- as she is such an amazing character.
If you enjoy fantasy, action-packed books, this is THE book for you.
I can make you that promise!!
— Jaime, Hunter House
I think it's an amazing book. It has so much fun and excitement. Everything you could possibly want in a book. And more.
— Rosa, Methodist College Belfast
I love all the Skullduggery books, with humour and irony running through them. I love the character of Valkyrie and I thought the ending of the Faceless Ones really left me eager for more.
— Jemima, Methodist College Belfast
This book was not the best book I have ever read. The start of it was not that engaging but the end was more exciting. It was a bit confusing as the names in it were a bit out of this world!
— Caolan, De la Salle College, Belfast
This book was amazing if you like sarcastic comments and dry wit. The only reason this book lost marks was because of a slightly predictable ending. Great for anyone who likes action, but suitable for boys and girls.
— Dervla , Methodist College Belfast
I thought that this book was aimed more towards boys than it was to girls, regardless, I still enjoyed it. I felt like I had missed out on some of the story due to not reading any of the other books in the series. I would thoroughly recommend it if you have a keen interest in magic, jokes and mythical creatures!
— Megan, St Patrick's High School, Keady
Ta an dúil agam in san leabhar seo mar cuid den am bhí se graimhair ach cuid eile den den am bhí sé go hiontach.Tá sé an leabhar is fear as an triur
— ciarán, Colaiste Feirste
Amazing, fast-paced book. Gripping start that compels readers to find out more. Witty remarks and sarcastic comments that make you want to laugh out loud. A daring read by Derek Landy that should be read and enjoyed by all.
— Curtis, Bangor Grammar School
I loved the book. Sometimes i laughed and sometimes i wondered what they were talking about. I can't wait until book 4 comes out. :)
— Jordan, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
this book was good
— pearse, Belfast Royal Academy
A lot of suspense in each chapter to keep you reading on. Definitely a page turner! I would recommend this book!
— Rachel, St Paul's Bessbrook
It is a very mysterious book. It is part of a series, it is the 2nd book, you would probably have to read the first one to completely understand it
— Courtney, Belfast Royal Academy
This is a very good book and is much better than the first one because it wasn't all about Sttephanie choosing her name.I like the way it seemed to draw you in and I couldn't put it down.
— Lynda, Belfast Royal Academy
This is one of my favourite books of all times. The stlye of the literature was fast paced and gripping.Skullduggery's humour is a flurry of punchy one-liners and sarcastic remarks. The idea of having a living skelleton is pure genius.Congratulations to Derek Landy for producing a laugh-out-loud edge-of-your seat thriller
— Adam , St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan
I didn't really like this book, it took a while to get into. I think you should read the first two books before you read the third - it would be a lot less complicated. I gave this book a 4 because it's hard to get into and i didn't think it was that good.
— Kellie, Lisneal College, L'Derry
This was one of the best children's books I have ever read. It was epic and dramatic but funny at the same time with Skullduggery's quirky talk adding a whole other side of the story. I love the magic in it as well because it made the book so much more exciting. Absolutely brilliant.
— Jason, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan
It is a great book, it's surprising and funny at times.
I like the way the author made you feel like you were in the story.
— Matthew, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
A great book with a blend of magic, adventure very surprising. you won't be able to stop reading once you start.
— montell, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
The Faceless Ones was a funny book and it had its moments but for me it was just like another evil villain style book - some guy wants to bring the world to an end but a super hero trys to stop it then something happens to the super hero then he is OK and saves the world.... I'm so surprised I said sarcastically.
— Dearbhail, Victoria College, Belfast
This book was similar to the others in the series. Skulduggery is a funny character and I laughed.
— David , Sullivan Upper School
I didn't know at first when I read the first few pages of this book if I was going to like it but then I read on and thought it was great. Some of it was really funny but some of it was really adventorous. I would definitly recommend this book to anyone.
— Jennie , Sullivan Upper School
A great book though you should definately read the other books in the series first. It has a great plot and I would recommend it though it's pretty hard to believe anything would ever happen like this in real life.
— Grace, Aquinas
A really great book apart from the fact that it has basically the same plot as the first two. Still good though.
— Michael, Sullivan Upper School
I have read the first and second and this one is by far the best!
— SINEAD, St Paul's Bessbrook
This book was possibly the best of the three that Derek Landy has written in this series. It was extremely thrilling and a real page turner. The vocabulary was excellent, it was a great read for the whole family and the ending was a perfect cliffhanger.
— Joshua, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan
