Paul Adam, Escape from Shadow Island
Random House. ISBN: 9780552560320
Max is an ordinary north London schoolboy by day, but at night he performs sell-out public shows as an escapologist - nicknamed The Half-Pint Houdini by the tabloid press. His father, Alexander, was also a world-renowned escapologist, who disappeared two years earlier in the Central American state of Santo Domingo. His body was never found, but Max's mother, Helen, was convicted of murdering her husband by a Santo Domingan court. One evening, after his show, Max receives a visit from a mysterious man from Santo Domingo - Lopez-Vega tells Max that his mother's trial was rigged and, if Max comes to his hotel room the following night, he has something to give him. When Max goes to the hotel, he finds Lopez-Vega dead, shot through the head. The room has clearly been searched by the killer, but what was he looking for? By chance, Max finds a piece of paper hidden under Lopez-Vega's wig. Written on the paper is a sequence of eight numbers - 83521113. What do the numbers mean? Are they a code, or maybe the combination for a lock or a safe? Could they be the key to unlocking the mystery of his father's disappearance and getting his mother out of prison?

This book was an amazing book i had no idea what it would be like because i just picked off a shelf but it was great. My favorite bit is when Max tried to save the Arab man it was sad when he died but what did the words he said mean? I would really recommend this book to 11 - 15 year old as it is truly BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!
— Tom, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
I think this is a very exciting book and very easy to read. I would love to read more books by this author.

My heart skipped a beat as Max held a dying man in his arms. I loved this book. It was very easy to understand. Of all the books I have read so for this has to be the best. Paul Adam needs to write a follow up, I cant wait to read the 2nd book!! It is suitable for ages eleven to fourteen.
— Maeve , Sacred Heart College, Omagh
It thought it was quite good, but it got a bit too confusing for me, and the end leaves you wanting more from it.
— Emer, Holy Cross College, Strabane
The book was fairly good. Kept me reading for long time. A bit boring at times but over all it was ok!

Having read all the mixed reviews of this book, my expectation level was quite low. However, I was really surprised - the book was exciting, fast moving and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it both to boys and girls. An adventure book with plenty of action.

Escape from Shadow Island is a very good book with twists and turns and daring ecapes from the very first page. It was an amazing read; even when I started I couldnt put it down. This is my favourite book so far and I would recommened to everyone.
— Sammy, Sacred Heart College, Omagh
I didn't enjoy this book. At the end of every chapter it didn't leave me hungry to read more. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone my age - not for me.

— Odhran, St Joseph's College Coalisland
OMG A-MA-ZING :-)
— Katie, St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen
A lot of the boys in this school have not stuck with this book and I can see why. It is very slow to start and Shadow Island is not mentioned until at least half way through the book. Even though the ending is a cliff-hanger it doesn't inspire me to read the next one. Not for me.
— Mrs Beattie, St Paul's Junior H S, Lurgan
This isn't the best book. It hadn't the same effect on me as the other books as at the end of each chapter it didn't make me want to read more.
— Eoin, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
Escape from Shadow island is a very good book, with twists and turns and daring ecapes from the very first page. Max is a very good character and it is interesting to follow his train of thought. The end is very surprising and I would not have changed anything in the book. My favourite character is Lopez-Vega because he travels all the way over from America to tell Max about his father.
— Katie, Belfast Royal Academy
I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. A good thriller but perhaps a bit slow in places - picks up the pace towards the end with some good twists leaving you wanting to read the next in the series.
— Mr McDonald, Victoria College, Belfast
This book is awesome. I loved every word i read. I can't wait for the sequel to come out, because i'll be the first in line for it. Paul Adam is a genius, and i hope to be an author like him one day. This book is addictive and once i started i couldn't put it down.
— Sophie, Sullivan Upper School
This is a brillant book. It leaves you on a cliffhanger so you dont know what's going to happen next. When I started it I didn't leave it down, I read the entire book in one night!!! It was great the way it gives you great images in your head and how well each charcher is described. I really hope there is a follow up.
— Clare, Sacred Heart College, Omagh
I LOVED THIS BOOK!! When I started reading it I couldnt put it down. I think it was well written so it could build up tension. Max was a great boy who loved his father. I think it was a sort of scary and mysterious book because at the end it just left you with a great cliff hanger!
— Evangeline, Sacred Heart College, Omagh
I thought this book a good read, good for girls and boys. I am looking forward to the sequel.
— Mrs M , St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen
This book is quite good, it is not my absolute faviourite, but it sure is up there somewhere. I like it because it is mysterious and I also don't like it because it is aimed at boys, like most of the other short-listed books, and it is a very slow-going book, then very fast, then very slow. The characters are confusing too... What a kerfuffle!!
— Jaime, Hunter House
I really liked Escape from Shadow Island. I thought it was an interesting thriller and it will keep all the readers guessing what will happen next. I really liked the characters and I thought that it was written beautifully. I would definitely recommend this to everyone over the age of 10. However if you are a little bit queasy I would advise you not to read it as it is a little gory in places. I loved this book and would read it again without a doubt.
— Megan, Sacred Heart College, Omagh
Really interesting book which I read in one sitting. Hard to imagine the main character is so young yet so accomplished. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. One for both boys and girls
— Mrs McConnell, St Louise's, Belfast
I liked this book because it was interesting. Everytime i read a chapter I wanted to read another, I didn't want to put the book down. The start of the book it was interesting because the main character was performing magic tricks, which was interesting.
— Sinead, Holy Cross College, Strabane
This is a good book which is full of twists and turns, clues and mysteries. It is definitely my type of book.
— Ciaran, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
This book was very confusing and boring at the start but got more exciting near the end. This book is okay!
— Lauren, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
it was positvely brilliant!
— Daniel , Methodist College Belfast
I thought this book was a little bit boring at the start but when it got more deeper into the story I couldn't put the book down until I had finished it - I was addicted to it. This book at the end was great but at the beginning it's boring.
— Shannon, Holy Trinity College, Cookstown
I thought the book was fantastic, while reading it I couldn't put it down and it really captures your mind.
When I was reading I held my breath and gasped when the characters held their breath and gasped.
I loved all the action and the tension and it all made up a great story line.
I've only read that book but the adventures of Max Cassidy, escape from shadow island was definately my winner.
It's a real page turner and I'd love to read more books by that author, and I really can't wait for a sequel.
— Niamh, St Joseph's H S, Crossmaglen
This has been my favourite to read so far! I thought the last few chapters wer dramtic and hope to read the next one!!
— Kerri, St Paul's Bessbrook
A good book. Great untill the end that is - it ended in the middle of the story.
— Dearbhail, Victoria College, Belfast
Great adventure story. Loved the escapology twist but the ending was disappointing. The was no resolution because he clearly wants to write a sequel.
— Mrs Campbell, St Paul's Bessbrook
An amazing book! One of the best books I've read. It has a lot of adventures and mysteries. I would recommend this book to anyone because I think they would like it too. I think the book is very well written and uses alot of description about what each person is thinking or how they feel. This is a really good book!!!
— Karolina, Sacred Heart College, Omagh
I thought this book was witty and interesting, and the twists and turns were surprising and funny at all times.
— Jemima, Methodist College Belfast
This is a fantastic book! I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and couldnt put it down. It had me on the edge of my seat throughout and I was constantly wondering what was going to be the outcome of Max's adventure! Brilliant!
— Jackie, Sacred Heart College, Omagh
This book is about a boy called Max who is an escapologist whose dad disappered and his mum was convicted of killing him. When I heard this I thought it would be amazimg but turns out it is actually quite boring. I just couldn't get into it. It wasn't exciting, adventurous or even funny. That is way I rate it 1.
— Charlie, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
Escape from Shadow Island is a great book. A lot of the action was quite scary. The middle and towards the end of the book was extremly tense. The way Paul Adam ended the book was great. I had never thought the ending was going to be like that. Overall I loved the book and would pass it to my friends to read because I'm sure they would love it just as much as i did.
— Katie, St Joseph's College Coalisland
I only read a couple of chapters of the book because I only got it on Tuesday, but so far I think it is very exciting.
— Niamh, St Louise's, Belfast
Absolutely suprisingly brilliant! The best book I read so far and do not underestimate the cover as it isn't as exciting as reading it.
— Rachel, St Paul's Bessbrook
A great book excitement from the very first page. There are daring escapes, exciting mysteries and a lot of action. Paul Adam has written a thriller.
— Ben, Royal Belfast Academical Institution
